FAQ
What are the responsibilities of an NEC elder?
NEC elders are responsible for making and carrying out decisions on behalf of the church. That means we are responsible for protecting and maintaining the mission of NEC as well as clarifying and communicating the vision. The bylaws also state, our board is responsible for:
Protecting and periodically evaluating and revising the mission of NEC;
Establishing, clarifying, and communicating the vision of NEC;
Providing spiritual discipline or censure for members and each other;
Making themselves available for congregational needs;
Addressing other matters of concern as required.
At this time, there are no specific term limits and elders can terminate at will. Newly appointed board members will have a one-year trial period and will be assessed to determine if they are indeed fulfilling the role which they were appointed to. The board meets monthly but may also be asked to be present for additional special events or church initiatives.
What exactly are you looking for in a candidate?
We are looking for people who are gifted with the discernment, knowledge and wisdom that is needed to oversee God's church. They should be mature in their faith, and well respected by others both within the church and the community. A nominee should also be a team player, able to work well with the existing board of Elders. All nominees must be members at NEC in good standing, using their time, energy and resources to further the mission of the church.
What does the nomination process entail?
The process for elder selection shall be is as follows:
The Elder Board determines the need to fill a seat on the board and requests that this need be shared with the congregation using various mediums. Anyone can nominate a current member of NEC for the position using a nomination form.
Elders conduct first-round triage from nominated candidates and make a selection of which individuals to move to step 3.
A questionnaire is sent to those candidates.
Elders conduct a second round triage based on questionnaire responses and determine 3-5 candidates whom they will pursue.
The Elders conduct candidate interviews.
Based upon these interviews the current elders will make a final selection of those elders to be admitted.
After the final selection is complete the congregation will be notified of the elder or elders selected.
What is the timeline? Please know these are subject to change.
January 2025: NEC members nominate individuals using our nomination form (see below).
February 2025: The Elder Board considers each nomination and notifies those who will continue to process. Candidates will be asked to complete a more thorough questionnaire.
March 2025: Finalist (3-5 individuals) will be invited to be interviewed by the Elder Board.
April 2025: A final candidate will be selected in April.
A final thought
The process of selecting an elder is one we approach with prayerful discernment, guided by Scripture and the needs of our community. We recognize the significance of this role in leading our church and the weight of responsibility it carries. Every person who expresses interest in serving as an elder is deeply valued, and we treasure the heart and willingness to serve that this demonstrates. The decision-making process is not taken lightly; it involves careful consideration, seeking God’s wisdom, and aligning with the biblical qualifications for leadership. While not every candidate may be selected at this time, please know that we honor and appreciate the gifts and dedication of everyone who steps forward. Your willingness to serve reflects the heart of Christ and strengthens the body of believers in profound ways.
